By George! Big win in Colorado

It's only three days old, but this USA Pro Cycling Championship has been full of surprises.

The latest is George Hincapie's (left) sprint finish victory -- at 8,000 feet elevation -- to end Stage 2 in Aspen on Wednesday.

Although he beat Tejay Van Garderen to the line -- a cyclist 15 years his junior, the HTC Highroad cyclist, above right, can find solace in taking the overall leader's yellow jersey.

RadioShack's Levi Leipheimer, who took the yellow jersey Tuesday on an uncharacteristic uphill attack at the finish in Crested Butte, dropped to fourth place overall. Hincapie raised himself to 2nd overall, followed by Tom Danielson (Garmin Cervelo) ...

oVo recumbent tandem UK manufacturer.

Article by; OvO tandems Richard Cresswell After a holiday in Brittany Richard came up with the idea to make a tandem recumbent ? I think he was fed up with waiting for me at the top of the hills. So the oVo was conceived. So now when we go away (2010 we did over 1,000 Km on one trip and in 2011 1685.5 Km) we arrive in the same place at the same time! He went back to basics for the design, steering away from a standard bike shape and replacing it with a sexy curve made from aluminium box section. It separates into two bags which means you can go on Euro star (?if you can get it through the X-ray machine mate we can get it on Euro star? quote from a porter at Euro star) and it does. In fact we went on 11/11 different trains this year through England, France, Holland and Belgium without refusal. The bags weigh 9.5Kg and 13.5Kg (less than the pannier bags did!)

Bike Touring Survival Guide: We Have E-Boook Winners!

As promised in last week's post, Book Review: Bike Touring Survival Guide, today I drew two winners from the comments and tips posted on both our blog and our Facebook page. In a coincidental turn of events, there was a winner from each site!

On the blog, jimirings asked,
"Do you have any experience with using e-readers on bike tours? I am planning a cross-country tour for next year (my first) and was considering buying one rather than trying to carry several books. My only concern is that I'll mostly be camping and was a bit worried about how and when I'd be able to charge it."
Be sure to click back to the post to read Friedel's response to jimirings.

And on the Facebook post, Chris Leach offer this piece of advice (?):
"Map corrections"? We don't need no stinking map corrections! Ride until there's no more road left!
While I might disagree on the point -- since map corrections are part of our bread and butter -- it could be a suggestion worth considering to spice up your adventure.

Chris and jimirings, drop me an email at jhmilyko AT adventurecycling DOT org so I can connect you with Friedel and Andrew to collect your free digital copy of their book.

Thanks for all the comments, questions, and tips from everyone! Be sure to go back and see what else your fellow cyclists had to offer.

Where old-time cyclists used to find support

A standard -- but usually unseen and unsung -- piece of athletic gear in many sports is the common jock strap.

Although I doubt that any cyclists wrapped up in lycra and chamois these days would consider using one, the jock strap was created to support bicycle riders.

While visiting a museum on Orcas Island this past week, I stumbled across this antique box for a Jockey Strap Suspensory. It was in a collection of early 20th Century items found in a home's private dispensary.

Topeak Road Morph Pump

It's been a long time since I've been really excited about a frame pump or mini-pump, but the Road Morph from Topeak has been among my favorite products as of late.

At around 14 inches long, the Road Morph is sized somewhere between a pocket pump and a full frame pump. It includes a mountain bracket that can either be bolted to your water bottle eyelets, or zip-tied to just about anywhere on your frame. It also fits nicely in a pannier or trailer.

The cool thing about this pump is that it transforms into a small frame pump when you need to use it. While it still doesn't match the easy handling and air power of a dedicated floor pump, it feels a lot more natural than most other on-the-road pump options, and can hit high pressures with relative ease. Another handy feature is that the pump has a built-in pressure gauge, which is surprisingly accurate, although the small numbering is a little hard to read. The pump is purported to have a max psi of 160, although the gauge only reads to 140 psi. (Unless you tour on performance road tubulars, this shouldn't be an issue.)

Overall construction is pretty solid, with an aluminum barrel that helps fight against flex or bending when you're trying to pump up a tire. The plastic handle, while small, doesn't seem fragile, so you don't feel as though you need to hold back when pumping. The only weak point might be the foot pedal that folds out, allowing you to stabilize the pump in an upright position. The plastic pedal doesn't seem super durable, although it has been holding up for me so far.

The pump retails for around $40, which is right in line with most other quality frame pumps. The pump head accepts both Presta and Schrader valves, and is one of six models in the Topeak Morph Pump series.

Saturday was a 10 mile TT organised by Kettering CC – the Frank & Joy Sheppard Memorial 10 mile TT. Despite a ‘sporting course’ i.e. a few hills and slow, it was quite popular with 82 entrants. There were quite a few different categories with some people racing on road bikes, 2up time trials and even Mountain bikes. It was a well supported event with lots of marshalls and signs saying how many miles left. The race was in honour of two clubFrank & Joy Sheppard stalwarts who loved cycling. It reminded me of Otley CC and the traditional post war British club scene. Joy Shephard c.1943 (love all the spectators at the finish) The wind was in the wrong direction (I guess it always is) so it was a tough ride. Though the last half was fast with a downhill and tailwind section. I finished 1st in a time of 21.55. I quite like the roads around Old and Mawsley. I did a 20 mile TT around here earlier in the year. R25/3L Sunday was a very different kind of race. The super fast R25/3L course in South Wales. I did a new pb of 49.31 (30.3mph) for 25 [...]

Cycling Infrastructure of the future

Author: Ian Monoghan If you are talking about sustainable transport you have to talk about bicycles ? the most sustainable form of transport we have. I'm all for investing millions of tax-payers money into carbonless fuel and alternative energy forces, but we have a mode of transport, already proven, that is 100% sustainable and it is in dire need of government investment in Cycling. Think about how we travel ? most of us, whether we are train users, drivers or bus users, use major arterial routes to get to train stations, under ground stations and bus terminals. But in order to get to these services we drive ? there are millions of cars across the UK that spend all day parked in a train or bus station or indeed on the side of the road while the owner uses these services to commute to work.

A Conversation with Greg Siple, Part 2: National Bicycle Touring Portrait Collection

If you've ever passed through Adventure Cycling's headquarters in Missoula, MT, or read a few issues of Adventure Cyclist, you're no doubt familiar with the National Bicycle Touring Portrait Collection. Framed portraits cover the wall space of our Cyclists' Lounge and pepper the rest of Adventure Cycling's offices -- both individually ("Dream Fulfilled") and in thematic groups ("Best Friends") -- accompanied by an interpretive explanation.

Started in 1982 by Adventure Cycling Co-founder Greg Siple, the collection now includes over 3,500 photos, with each rider's story told through accompanying documents. The paper trail always includes the questionnaire given to the rider at the time Greg shot the portrait, and often a response to a follow-up questionnaire. In the meantime, some riders choose to send in additional correspondence, including detailed letters, postcards, photos, newspaper clippings showing local coverage of their trip, wedding announcements, and more.

Last week Greg and I discussed some of his historical projects. This week, we delve into the portrait collection.

How did this the portrait series start?

How do you choose which visitors to shoot?

Do you have a favorite portrait?

Can you tell us about the circus cyclist?

How do you see the future of this collection? Will the portraits stop when you retire, or do you see someone else continuing your work?

What has motivated you over the past 29(!) years to keep shooting these portraits?

Love and Hate on the Great Divide

Don't let the title of this article fool you. This isn't about romance and marriage -- even though I just completed a six day mountain bike tour with my best friend and wedded partner of 23 years.

No, this is about suffering one minute, only to be wowed and blissful the next. This is about rolling through scenic mountain valleys, breathing in fresh air on low (almost no) traffic roads, followed by climbing, climbing, loud breathing (panting really), head down, focused concentration, and a great deal of motivational self-talk. This is about praising colleague and route architect, Mac McCoy one second, and cursing him the next.

This is about a small section of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route -- a section just a short distance from my hometown, Missoula, MT.

I've driven through the region many times over the course of my life in Montana, but never on these roads and never at bike pace. Let me tell you, if you really want to see, hear, smell and experience Montana, there is no better way than the Great Divide.

My hubby and I started on a sunny Tuesday from the rustic little town of Ovando, MT. That first 20 miles was one of the prettiest of the trip -- with the Bob Marshall Wilderness guiding us on our left as we passed through aspen groves, and then climbed Huckleberry Pass. There's nothing like the reward of climbing a pass to find an epic down hill to your destination.

Exiting Lincoln, MT, the next morning, I wondered how I had passed through this little town hundreds of times and never saw this gorgeous homestead (pictured above).

Each day had its logistical challenges -- like forgetting to strap down the back of the Burley and losing a shoe somewhere along the trail. Oh well, he brought too many anyway!

But the truly epic day on our trip was Helena to Basin; a portion of this section of the route uses Lava Mountain Trail #244. Here we were forced to push over a 7-mile trail that had been ravished by heavy snow run-off and ATV use (which is actually not allowed on this particular trail).

As difficult as the push up was, the down was just as challenging, especially with the two-wheeled Burley and my loaded bike.

But we made it -- though we may have taken a few wrong turns, landing on a cattle trail (much to the cows' surprise!) -- but then we found the right road and wound our way down, down, down to Basin, and the Merry Widow Health Mine and Campground, where we enjoyed a hot shower and visits from neighboring campers, who had come from all over the continent to enjoy the health benefits of the radon gas released in the mines in this area.

And though I hated the head wind the next morning, I loved the little things that enriched the trip, like coming across Sullivan Gulch Trail Head as we headed into Butte, and stirring up hundreds of butterflies as we passed along the trail. And in the end, it was the the good things that count; the beauty and bliss of the mountains that I'll remember. It's the companionship of my husband and the taste of that huckleberry ice cream cone. Yeah, I'll remember that for a long, long time.

Candy Break

I always smile when I look at this photo. It was taken many years ago, but it feels like I snapped it yesterday.

It was early morning in India in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Lots of climbing, steep grades, and snow on the ground. I pedaled up to this tiny roadside store to buy a cup of hot chai to warm my hands and get my daily sugar rush.

The four girls in the photo were walking to school and stopped at the store as well. They all bought candy and quickly unwrapped the sweets and popped them in their mouths. I already had my camera out. As I was about to take their photo, some of the men outside began to joke with the girls that they shouldn't be spending all their money on candy. Three of the girls are reacting to the teasing. But one of the girls looks right into my camera. Her gaze has intrigued me over the years.

Looking at this photo, I can feel the rock I was sitting on. I can smell the wood from the fire built to boil chai. And I can still hear the girls' laughter.

Many a journey's details are lost over time. But some travel memories never fade.

Bikepacking Close to Home

A few members from the Adventure Cycling Tours Department recently struck out for a bikepacking weekend trip. We were on a low-key mission to test some gear and explore some of our local surroundings. We kept the adventure close to home and had extremely modest goals. Such an attitude, we found, can help ease the stress of a new adventure. I also find it's best to put the journey ahead of the destination when trying something new like this.

We were completely self-contained, which further reduced the stress of a having to plan for a destination. We also chose an area with a lot of options for camping and exploring. We drove to Rock Creek, only about 40 miles east of Missoula, MT (home of Adventure Cycling). Our main option for travel was a hard-packed gravel road (shared by cars), but with lots of single-track side trip options. (Finding a route that doesn't initially require a car can additionally help to reduce stress. We would have been even more satisfied had we been able to leave right from home via bicycle ... Next time!)

Our route, shown above in red, involved exploring the Grizzly Creek Drainage and then heading down the hard-packed road to the Siria Campground. Our loop was rich with options, from creeks for swimming, to campgrounds every few miles, fishing if we desired, and many hiking/biking trails.

Since this was only my third bikepacking adventure, I thought I would test a few things; here is what I learned:
  1. I prefer riding the trails to the road, which made the single-wheel B.O.B trailer a bit unwieldy. It was also easily hung up on downed trees while bushwhacking or circumnavigating deadfall. However, the trailer was great on the bumpy gravel road, and very easy to pack.
  2. I need lighter gear that can be more easily compressed and fit better in bikepacking bags.
  3. I would be more comfortable over longer distances carrying gear on a mountain bike, as opposed to on my cross bike.

I asked the extraordinary Paul Hansbarger what he learned, and he had this to say, "I learned that I can get by with less, but I would like to improve my options for carrying more gear on the bike and less on my back." Wise words. Steve has left us for the summer, but I'm pretty sure he would say that he learned he is even more awesome than he thought he was (just kidding Steve!). Actually, I interviewed Steve by phone and he had this to say: "I would never use a trailer for bikepacking, ever ... and that I dittos Paul's comment." Hmmm, maybe Steve had to help me just one too many times get unstuck from the downed debris and log crossings.

I think we are all getting ready for our next bikepacking adventure. It's really all about trial and error and refining the system. Find a fun, easy place to go for an initial trip, take some notes, and enjoy the experience.

Bike-Packing Post Script:
Paul and his partner-in-craft have since purchased a sewing machine and will soon embark on creating customized bags for their bikes and friends' bikes (right?).

Mo has purchased a super-light sleeping bag that is highly compressible and a single person tent. A new mountain bike is on the way.

Steve is also planning to fashion some custom frame bags.

Now all we have to do is find our next adventure. Got any ideas?

Cycle Safely and Win a Prize

Youngster in Oxford are to be rewarded for cycling with a helmet on – they will receive a free goody bag from the local police. (Oxford Mail) It is hoped this will encourage responsible cycling from an early age. But, I wonder what will a teenager will get if he’s wearing a hoodie under his cycle helmet? Of course, it’s an excellent idea, but perhaps we should extend the scheme and give goody bags to motorists who drive safely. Anyone who actually sticks to the 20mph speed limit could be either given a packet of Werther’s Original or given some minus points on their driving license to offset future speeding tickets. Or perhaps we should start giving prizes for best dressed cyclists. i.e. the cyclist with most square inches of high viz clothing. Or maybe we could reward youngsters who aren’t clinically obese with a voucher for a free Big Mac and fries from their local McDonalds (as long as they didn’t loot it on the previous evening) Related Reasons to wear a cycle helmet - I should say, don’t pay any attention to my sarcasm. Pass It On

This week, I am making preparations to send my first ever touring bike to my little sister. I'm cleaning it off, taking off the old stickers, and making sure everything is in perfect working condition.

When I started my job at Adventure Cycling more than three years ago, I wanted a bike for touring, commuting, mountain biking, and cyclocross racing. I found all that in my 48 inch Surly Cross Check. My bike took me over 10,000 foot passes in Peru, through the Missoula Cyclocross series (last place every time, baby!), and to work and back all year long (with the help of some gnarly studded snow tires come winter). It really was the bike that could do it all!

But, as I began to learn more about cycling, I began to understand more about what I liked and wanted. I now have a designated racing bike that is lighter, and was gifted a touring bike with a triple crankset in the back that allows me to climb more easily. It's time for my Surly to venture onward, to the streets of Philadelphia, where it will deliver my sister to work each day and maybe start going on some East Coast tours as well. I'm even including a brand new Brooks saddle for her to break in. There's really nothing better than giving someone you love a bike that you love.
