California Winter Riding Style and Warmth Guide

California Winter Riding. Does that even exist? It can vary from sunny balmy days to a crisp frosty morning to a damp foggy afternoon gust. No matter the conditions, it is always important to dress appropriately, and of course with a little style. RAGBRAI and BAK announce 2012 bicycle tour routes

If you're curious about the 2012 routes for RAGBRAI XL (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) or BAK (Biking Across Kansas), then you've been waiting for this weekend.

Organizers of both popular across-state bicycle tours announced their routes, a combined 946 miles of bicycling for anyone lucky enough to do both.

Between the two, they have 77 years of experience ushering bicyclists across their states in hot summer sun, thunder showers, and occasional windstorms -- all the while ensuring the cyclists can consume copious quantities of pie.

This is the 40th anniversary of RAGBRAI (July 22-28), a mass bicycle tour of 10,000 people. Perhaps to celebrate the occasion, the ride will be among the least challenging...

Where bicycling boosts local economies -- two more cases

Two studies released this week -- one in Iowa and the other in bike-friendly Boulder -- once again prove that bicycling is good for local economies.

The new studies support similar reports from Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and elsewhere that bicyclists are capable of opening their wallets and spreading around some cash, sometimes at a jaw-dropping rate.

The Iowa report finds that recreational bicycling creates nearly $365 million in direct or indirect economic benefit to the state; $1 million a day. Bicycle commuting adds another $54 million a year.

Cycling strong at 80

An 80-year-old retired California school teacher did something on his birthday that too few seniors do -- he got some exercise by taking a long bike ride.

Ray Houlihan's bicycle ride took him 103 miles around his hometown of Turlock on a December day. He's completed 15 centuries over the past 20 years or so.

Bike Overnight: Over the Cascades

This week's Bike Overnight, written by Kevin MacLachlin, is about a family trip over (and through) the Cascades of Washington State on the Iron Horse Trail. Their Over the Cascades ride took place, obviously, at a time of year when there wasn't quite as much snow in that mountain range as there is right now.

The Iron Horse Trail, formally known as Iron Horse State Park, follows the former route of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad, aka the Milwaukee Road, for more than 100 miles, from Cedar Falls to the Columbia River.

For a large share of its route between Harlowton, Montana, and Tacoma, Washington, the Milwaukee Road utilized electric rather than steam locomotives, and during the early 20th century it was the largest -- in terms of distance, at 656 miles -- electrified railroad in the country. Other popular rail-trails following its former right-of-way include the spectacular Route of the Hiawatha, spanning the Montana-Idaho border, and the Kim Williams Trail, located in Adventure Cycling's hometown of Missoula, Montana.

You might also want to have a look at the Gear Review (BOB IBEX trailer) that posted on BikeOvernights.org last Wednesday.

Cycling in New England and New York

Some of my most memorable cycling experiences have unfolded on the beautiful back roads, trails, and sandy beaches of New England and New York. As a resident of Massachusetts for 26 years, I spent many a long weekend exploring the quiet areas, away from traffic and hoards of people.

Vineyards of the Finger Lakes
Let's start in New York. This year we're offering a new tour in the Finger Lakes region, which is of course dotted with several lakes, but nestled among them are awesome wineries. Although the region is also known for hills, our Finger Lakes Loop self-contained tour was designed especially for intermediate riders and follows some of the milder hills in the region. For me, the quiet roads and wineries are worth every modest climb.

Road to Lake Placid
North and east of the Finger Lakes are the Adirondack Mountains. With slightly more challenging terrain, Adirondack Park is the largest publicly protected area in the Lower 48, greater in size than Yellowstone, the Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon national parks combined! Our Adirondack Loop self-contained tour takes place predominately in the park. You will even visit the historic town of Lake Placid -- famous for 2 memorable winter Olympics!

Beaches of Cape Cod
Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in early spring offer some of the best riding to be found in the east. Our new Cape Cod Pilgrimage is a journey through the past of colonial America alongside rocky bays and beautiful white sand beaches of the Atlantic seacoast, through quaint villages with traditional New England commons, and on ferry rides from one spectacular scenic view to another. The riding is relatively flat and easy so you can spend more time enjoying the views than turning the pedals.
Vermont Lake in Spring
Last, but not least, is the beautiful Green Mountain State of Vermont and the Northeast Kingdom. Lake Champlain is set against the classic Vermont backdrop of lush green hills. In autumn, Vermont is bursting with the reds, oranges, yellows, and bright greens of the season. What better way to go leaf peeping than by bicycle during the Vermont Inn-to-Inn tour?

Sleepless Til Seattle from Missoula

In Routes and Mapping, we regularly respond to questions that arrive via the online Contact Us link available on the Adventure Cycling website. In December 2010, it was through this form that I received a note from Graham in Scotland who was preparing to ride across the U.S. with his friend, Pauline.

It was a fairly straightforward opening series of questions: Should we ride the Northern Tier or TransAmerica route? Which direction should we ride, east to west or west to east? What about prevailing winds? I answered his questions and moved on to the next task needing my attention. And then he wrote back, what about panniers? Should I consider using a trailer? Our correspondence continued for the next couple of months as his planning proceeded.

Generally, this is where the conversations end -- I rarely hear back on how the trip went. It was a little bit different this time around with Graham and Pauline. Along the way, Graham had shared with me that he was a filmmaker and he intended to record their trip in a video diary with the possibility of making a full length film at the end. His blog title "Sleepless Til Seattle" intrigued me and I added it to my list of trips I wanted to follow virtually through the summer.

As time permitted, I checked in on Sleepless Til Seattle occasionally to see where they were and how they were doing. I thoroughly enjoyed Graham's video clips and learned a lot about the people and history found along the Northern Tier.

Surprising to me, I heard from Graham directly now and again. Often he'd have a little tidbit to share about services and teasers for the latest video diary entry. In fact, his eloquently worded email and video piece on conditions near Williston, North Dakota, proved to be the tipping point in favor of us significantly moving the Northern Tier Route as far from the active oil and gas exploration occurring there as possible. (More information to come on that topic.)

In early October, I received a hand written note from Graham and Pauline. They had finished their journey from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington, and their happy faces beamed back at me that it had been a success.

Today has Graham back in Scotland and Pauline is pedaling her bicycle in New Zealand -- following her vision of an around the world journey. I continue to be in touch with Graham as he begins putting together the Sleepless Til Seattle film. He is even more inspired to share his experience, "We set out with pre-conceived ideas of America, its people and its culture, based on little more than a lifetime of watching American movies and reading the biased reporting of the press. What we discovered as we pushed west was a country with a generous heart, a can-do spirit and a people that showed us how easy it is to be kind."

To get a taste of the experience of the Sleepless Til Seattle duo, be sure to check out the video diaries Graham made from the road.

As in many a great venture, capital is required to get things started and keep it going. An IndieGoGo campaign has been created to support the film making process. They have an initial fundraising goal of $18,000 by April 1. If you would like to help bring this story to the big screen, you can donate via their IndieGoGo page.

Graham has a post on his blog outlining the project and campaign. If you wish to keep current with the progress of the film, you can follow them on Twitter (@bostontoseattle) or check in on their Sleepless Til Seattle Facebook page.

Applying for a U.S. Bike Route

I get this question quite frequently: "How do we apply for a U.S. Bike Route?" The answer is actually simple -- all you need is a map of the route, a route log documenting the roads and trails, and a signature from the Chief Executive Officer at the state Department of Transportation (DOT).

Filling out the application is easy, and it was designed that way on purpose. However, preparing the documentation that precedes the application is where things are a bit more complicated.

Before I get into too many the details, let me provide a little background about the Application for Designation of a U.S. Bicycle Route. The state's DOT nominates a route for numbered designation to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Special Committee on U.S. Route Numbering (USRN). The AASHTO USRN committee is NOT approving the suitability of a route for bicycling; they ARE approving the number that will be applied to the route. This is why the Corridor Plan, which lays out the numbering system for each potential route, is so important (developed by the Task Force for U.S. Bicycle Routes and approved by AASHTO executive board in 2008). In approving the application, the USRN committee is acting on the assurance that the DOT has done due diligence in reviewing the route and has gained all the necessary local jurisdictional approvals (more on this later) so that they can approve the number that makes an interstate bicycle route.

AASHTO is not a federal agency, but a nonprofit association representing highway and transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. AASHTO committees are made up of transportation officials, and they write guidance and policies on all things transportation. They work closely with the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. DOT, and they have approved the numbering of our highway system since its inception.

Now, let's get back to what's involved in submitting an application.
  • Authority: DOT management must be on board. If not, the application will never move forward. Gaining the signature of the director of a DOT might require multiple meetings to educate upper management about the benefits (PDF) and reasons why U.S. Bike Routes are good for their state. The DOT then submits the application to USRN approximately six weeks previous to either the AASHTO Fall Annual Meeting (October) or spring meeting (May).
  • Agreements: Most DOTs will require all the road and trail "owners" to agree to the bicycle route (download our Template Resolution of Support Word document). In other words, whoever manages and maintains the road or trail must provide documentation that they support the designation (PDF). In some states, this is simple. The DOT or similar state agency, such as a Department of Natural Resources (DNR), manages most of the roads/trails and therefore has the authority to designate them. However, in some states it's very complicated. Road jurisdiction changes with every township -- every six miles. Yow! That's a lot of agreements. Most states are somewhere in the middle, with a healthy combination of municipal and county governments, other agencies (DNRs or Parks and Recreation), and state DOT-managed roads.
  • Collaboration: We're seeing state agencies work closely with the bicycle and trail community to define the routes and gain the jurisdictional agreements. This is a good thing. Not only does it leverage public agency staff time, it helps ensure a route that the cycling and trail community will endorse -- and, just as important, one that will be enjoyed by the bike traveling public! I stress to state agencies that choosing a long-distance bicycle route doesn't have to be complicated, but it is important to have some level of consistency across the country. While the Task Force established Corridor Criteria (PDF) with some specific recommendations for route criteria, the general feeling was that decisions about suitability be made at the state level, since conditions and terrain across the country vary so widely. Florida worked with many advocates, trail organizations, and other state agencies to draft Criteria for U.S. Bicycle Routes (PDF); other states, such as Wisconsin, have had methodology (PDF) for establishing bike routes for decades. These guidelines provide the right blending of flexibility with preferred conditions (shoulders, bike lanes, traffic volume) that guide volunteers and state agency staff in choosing the roads and trails that will make the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) great.
  • Connections: In the application, AASHTO requires that states comply with the Purpose and Policy in Establishment and Extending U.S. Bicycle Routes (PDF). This is a 10-point list that provides the framework that defines the USBRS. For example, #4 states "U.S. Bicycle Routes must connect two or more states, a state and an international border, or two or more U.S. Bicycle Routes." Therefore, neighboring states must either submit joint applications or have an agreement between them that endorses the route as it connects into their state. The endorsement indicates that the neighboring state will implement that route across their state at some point in the future.
  • Signs: AASHTO is encouraging states and local agencies to sign U.S. Bike Routes, but they are not required to do so as part of the application. While I think signed U.S. Bike Routes are a critical aspect of a fully functioning, endorsed, promoted and recognized system, I also appreciate that this isn't a potential barrier for states to get involved. Because states are collaborating closely with bicycle and trail groups, I feel confident that the route network will be signed. In addition, we at Adventure Cycling aren't giving up on the idea that some day there will be a grant program to help states meet the cost of signing, planning, and adding shoulders or other amenities to U.S. Bicycle Routes.
So there you have it, the simple application and all its details spelled out. It really isn't that complicated after all.

BUILDING THE U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM (USBRS) is posted by Ginny Sullivan, USBRS coordinator at Adventure Cycling, and features news and updates related to the emerging U.S. Bicycle Route System. The USBRS project is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by a task force under the auspices of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Members of the task force include officials and staff from state DOTs, the Federal Highway Administration, and nonprofits like the East Coast Greenway Alliance, and Mississippi River Trail, Inc.

3 states seek to join 19 that require 3-foot passing around cyclists

Updated Jan. 20, 2012 -- Bicycle advocates in Pennsylvania are pushing for a bill that would require drivers give cyclists 4 feet of clearance when they pass.

The legislation, HB 170, passed the Pennsylvania House last May, but got pigeon-holed in the Senate's Transportation committee. Supporters want to win Senate approval and the governor's signature this session.

If the bill is approved, Pennsylvania would be the 20th state to require that motorists give bicycle riders 3 or more feet of clearance when passing. The law also confirms a cyclist's right to the road and makes it illegal to right hook a bicycle rider.

California advocates also are seeking new 3-foot legislation this year after last year's veto ...

Becoming Bike Travel Friendly: Minneapolis Case Study

I recently came across a couple of articles about Minneapolis that got me thinking. The first one was about a new vending machine and bike station, called BikeFixtation, which enables cyclists to fix their bikes on the fly. And the other story focused on the city's increasing bike/walk numbers recorded over the past few years (up 52% since 2007). The increase is attributed to the ever-growing infrastructure the city is investing in -- both on- and off-road accommodations and a top-notch bike share program, called Nice-Ride. Additionally, the Mississippi National River Recreation Area, a 72-mile urban national park (pictured above) that runs through the Twin Cities, views alternative transportation options as a priority for both locals and tourists who wish to experience this unique park.

So, I started to think about what makes Minneapolis so special. Long before they had bike share and bike boulevards, they had a vision for the city. Minneapolis began putting in transit, then connected transit with trails and bike-friendly roads -- in essence, they created a network that could accommodate various transportation options. A few years ago, these efforts were rewarded when Minneapolis was one of four cities each given $25 million for a federal project called the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program, which seeks to demonstrate how infrastructure can boost bicycling and walking rates (I believe they've been successful). Bike Walk Twin Cities administers the grant.

The Twin Cities are exactly the kind of urban setting cyclists want to access before, during, and/or after their tours. In a bicycle tourism survey recently conducted by Adventure Cycling, respondents indicated that most cyclists on tours enjoy small to medium sized cities. Why? Probably because most large cities aren't as easy to get around by bicycle as places like Minneapolis and St. Paul. Nor do most cities connect cycling to other transportation modes the way the Twin Cities do.

But there are small things that any city -- large, medium, or small -- can do to become more bike-travel friendly. Think of the Fixtation at the very basic level; just having a bike pump and a patch kit available. There's an entire list of such ideas on the Adventure Cycling "Building Bike Tourism" page that might spark some ideas for your city.

And where should these small, but helpful amenities be placed? Where cyclists go, of course: coffee shops, ice cream shops, bike shops, restaurants, libraries, tourism and information centers, campgrounds, bed & breakfasts, inns, and motels.

Minneapolis is a great case study -- a place that many other communities can aspire to emulate. With weather conditions that are often snowy and blustery, and despite facing many of the same growth issues other American cities deal with, Minneapolis is taking a different approach. And the result is a healthier, more active community. According to this blog, it's the third fittest city in America. Now that's something to boast about!

Lazy Days

For most of us, wintertime is a little bit of a lazier time of year. Yeah, you do some skiing and cold-weather commuting, but unless you're a fat-bike aficionado you probably do a little less riding and a little more couch surfing during the winter. And that's not necessarily a bad thing! It's nice to give our bodies a rest and some time to properly rebuild. It also gives us some time to think about the adventures we'd like to have in the upcoming year, and to read stories that inspire us. If we went as hard as we could all the time, we'd just get burned out.

Awesome Summer Family Vacations

Ah, the holidays are over, children are returning to school, and young adults will be heading back to college soon. Winter is beginning to settle in in most places in the country, with the coldest of weather just ahead. The good news? The days are finally getting longer.

Arlen, Chris, Brandon circa 1992
As I think back to when my boys, now in their mid-twenties, were teens and pre-teens, I fondly remember the glimmers of excitement that developed after the holidays. Our attention continued on winter sports, school, music, and clubs, but our thoughts invariably focused on summer. January and February, the time for summer vacation planning! Summer camps, weekend trips, visitors, vacations! Summers sometimes seemed as hectic as the holidays, but they were totally packed with fun and excitement. The calendars were placed on the table and the family began to talk about all that we wanted to do in the summer. Cycling opportunities and vacations were definitely on the agenda. Where to go? With whom to cycle? How long to ride? What to bring?

A ride in the rain -- C&O Family Fun
One of the beauties of an Adventure Cycling Family Fun tour is that all the logistics of the tour are handled for you. Once you arrive, you simply ride, enjoy the scenery, and share time with your children -- or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends. You can explore Colorado's mountains, Missouri's Katy Trail, or the C&O Canal. Every tour is catered with some of the best grub around prepared by our finest tour chefs. You'll ride load-free, with Adventure Cycling staff carry your tent and gear in a support vehicle. You have the opportunity to ride with your children and your children have the opportunity to meet other kids that like, or love, to ride. There are lots of sites to explore, with ample social time for everyone.

What are you waiting for? Start dreaming about, and planning for that family cycling vacation that you and your children will never forget! Check out our Family Fun tours now.
