How do you stay dry on a day like this?

When the weather decides to throw a curve ball like today, it?s easy to get caught out on your bike and get absolutely soaked on the cycle home. This is when you discover that cycling jacket you are wearing is definitely water resistant as opposed to water proof. Cycling home with wet legs The one [...]

Cycling and Dining on the Central California Coast

This week's Bike Overnight comes from Rachel Duchak, who runs the blog, CentralCoastFoodie.com.

Rachel's story, titled "A Central Coast Foodie Bike Overnight," is about cycling and eating up the great scenery and the good food along the central coast of California in the Big Sur-San Luis Obispo area. It begins like this:

?You can?t camp here,? they said, looking at our bike-camping bivouac in the middle of the military base. The two police officers from Fort Hunter Liggett -- 50 miles north of Paso Robles in the rural foothills of the Santa Lucia Range -- were ruining my thoughts of a restful sleep tucked in the tent with my sweetie.
I actually should thank them for giving us the chance to check out The Hacienda, William Randolph Hearst?s old hunting lodge at Fort Hunter Liggett -- and possibly preventing us from ending up stuck in some tank's treads as the Army played war games around us in the dark. With the closest campsite a dozen miles down the unlit road, we headed back to the well-lit base to see if we could wrangle a room at The Hacienda. Such was the first night of our tour over the Santa Lucia Range and through Big Sur, via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road and Highway 1.
... From the top of the climb, dense trees clouded the view of the ocean. At its summit, Nacimiento-Fergusson Road bisects a dirt road; the way north heads to Cone Peak (6 miles one way); going south, it heads along Plaskett Ridge and to some dispersed campsites. No water or facilities in either direction, but plenty of views.

You can read Rachel's entire Bike Overnight tale at BikeOvernights.org. While there, also check out the archives of bike overnights and Photos of the Week. Our recent weekly photo selection, published April 13 and featured below, comes courtesy of Matt Alford, from his post, Bikepacking to 'Bag' Mt. Townsend.

Fully-Supported Tours Spring to Life!

Our 2012 tour season is already well underway, and a few trips have just recently finished up, including our popular fully-supported tour, Texas Hill Country. Starting on the banks of the Guadalupe River outside of New Braunfels, Texas, this idyllic spring tour was spun alongside batches of bluebonnets, through some of the area?s most unique historic communities, and provided opportunities to visit several sites dear to the Hill Country heart -- Historic Gruene Hall, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock, Luckenbach General Store, LBJ Ranch, the swimming holes at Blanco and Pedernales Falls State Parks, and the Devil?s Backbone -- just to name a few.
From what we?ve heard, the tour was a blast. Thank you to caterer Kathy Jordan for the great food;  to event director Dave Patterson and staff for
excellent leadership, route support and luggage transport; and most importantly, to an enthusiastic and lively group of Adventure Cycling riders!

If you?re looking for a similar fully-supported tour experience, then be sure to saddle up for one of these upcoming Adventure Cycling tours:

Colorado Wildflowers & Rivers: August 11-17
Oregon Coastal Odyssey: August 18-24

Three Women Athletes Who Inspire Me to Take it to the Next Level

I love getting outside and moving my body around. It makes me feel alive. This post goes out to three super-awesome women who teach me how to be braver, stronger, quicker. There are so many inspirational ladies out there. Who do you look at for lessons?

Joan Benoit Samuelson's name to me is synonymous with women's distance running. She was born in 1957. She was a track star in college, but when she got into distance training she was so uncomfortable running in public on roads outside her small town that she'd pretend she was looking at flowers when a car would pass her. Finally, she got over her fear of running in public. Joan went on to win the gold medal at the 1984 summer Olympics for the marathon, and still holds the fastest time for an American woman at the Chicago Marathon and the Olympic Marathon. Lesson: Do what you love, and don't worry about what others think.

Just a few short years ago, Evelyn Stevens was working long hours as an associate on Wall Street--then she bought a bike for exercise. After a fun experience in a local race, Evelyn entered another...and won. Then she just kept winning. And she hasn't stopped. The thing with Evelyn Stevens is that she's just built for bike racing. She's capable of putting out huge amounts of leg power for her size and has incredible aerobic capacity. Now she rides for team Specialized/lululemon and is well on her way to becoming one of the best cyclists in the world. Lesson: Don't be afraid to try new things. You never know what secret strengths your body holds.
Steph Davis is an incredible, inspiring rock-climber, but I included her on my list because I love her blog where she she answers all sorts of questions, from how climbing shoes should fit to how to bake vegan cheesecake (really!). She seems so awesome and down to earth and interesting and exactly like the person you'd want on the other end of your rope. Sometimes when my hands hurt from climbing and I'm convinced I'll always be terrible, I read about Steph's incredible adventures and get all revved up again. Lesson: How to make oven-baked fries. Also, only fear is keeping you from being your greatest.

Country Roads Take Me Home: West Virginia

This week's bike overnight comes from Dave Battista, an adventure sports PE teacher in the Pittsburgh area, who says he enjoys four seasons of adventure, especially with his family. "I am currently motivated by creating long off-road tours in the Mid-Atlantic Region," Dave says. "I'm planning a 10-day loop through the Monongahela National Forest for this coming summer of 2012."

Dave's story about his inaugural trip, which he did with some friends back in 2006, is titled Country Roads Take Me Home: West Virginia. For three days, the group pedaled a combination of the paved roads, dirt and gravel roads, and rail-trails that wind through the crazy maze of terrain that is West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest.

"The reality of pulling our belongings behind us set in as we headed down the dusty and rolling forest road, quickly understanding why West Virginia is known as 'The Mountain State,'" Dave writes. "Soon we were treated to one of many mountain vistas. After rolling onto pavement (Route 28), we climbed over Allegheny Mountain and coasted into our campsite for the evening -- Island Campground, situated on the banks of the East Fork of the Greenbrier River. The fishing looked spectacular."

We were delighted to learn that for this and every subsequent West Virginia trip he has taken, Dave uses the Monongahela National Forest mountain-biking map that Adventure Cycling created in partnership with the forest back in the mid-1990s. "It's a great map for planning," he says; "a really good starting point."

One of the highlights of the group's trip was watching and hearing the Durbin Rocket storm out of the depot in the town of Durbin. The steam-powered excursion train is pulled by Old No. 3, said to be one of just three operational Climax geared logging locomotives remaining in the world. The 55-ton behemoth was built in 1910 for the Moore-Keppel Lumber Co. in nearby Randolph County.

Bike shop?s and poor customer service!

I wonder how many cyclist have felt the same way as I do about entering a bike shop the feeling that they do not want you there or the view you as an other idiot that has not got a clue, well at least the impression that I get when walk into some of the bike shops. I remember when I was looking for my second road bike I went to Evans cycles as they let you have a quick ride for a one pound deposit taken of your credit card, I was greeted by a young girl that was no more than 4 years old or at least she had about that amount of knowledge about bikes, this was totally of putting she had to keep on asking a senor sales assistant if the bikes that I was interested in were in stock you would have thought she would have known or at least be able to use the shops computer to find out. The 2nd bike shop I went to never had no time and thought I had only come there to waste there time at least that?s the impression I got. The third shop was more than helpful, I stood there talking to a friendly assistant that knew quite a lot about bikes they had in stock and asked me what I was going to use the bike for and went about explaining about the advantage of a stiff of bottom brackets, and what groupset would be best at the budget I had in mind etc. Guess from whom I brought my bike from ?Exactly? it called customer service.

Is Addison Lee good for London cyclist?

At this stage I have to say RIP to all those who have lost there lives cycling on the UK roads at the hands of motorist. The Addison Lee debate seems to be the topic of the moment, its either the boss of Addison Lee John Griffin is a genius or and absolute idiot. Griffin's original article had stirred up heated debate on the internet as it suggested that cyclists in London willingingly took their lives into their own hands by riding on roads. He said that cyclists should be properly trained and pay for using roads, summing up the article with "It is time for us to say to cyclists 'You want to join our gang, get trained and pay up'. I have come to the conclusion that he is a genius he is getting loads of free advertising when you think cab firm the 1st name that you will think of now will be Addison Lee. He has been in the printed press on the radio, Twitter, Facebook and now even I find my self-writing about John Griffin and Addison Lee. He is also good for cyclist and has highlighted the fact that cyclist need to stick together as we seem to be gaining more power in transport discussions in the city, we even have the London mayoral candidates fighting over or vote it is important that cycling stays free and free from the involvement of big business. It does not matter what John Griffin says about cyclist he is only a cab firm who wants to use the bus lanes and has been clever in the way he has diverted the attention of that topic and on to cycling and cyclist. What worry?s me if he get his way it would mean all cab firms and independent cab drivers will want to be able to use the bus lanes putting more cyclist in danger, a bus lane is like a secondary bike lane where as a cyclist.

Traveling the Southern Tier: Judge Dave - Flat Court

The Adventure Cycling Association's Southern Tier tour has just finished their second week on the road arriving in Silver City, NM in the early afternoon. One of the many activities the tour participants enjoy is comparing the number of flat tires of each rider and the total for the group. On my Southern Tier with Adventure Cycling, the leaders awarded prizes for the least and most flats. To everyone's surprise the person with the least flats received a small box of nails; the person with the most flats received a CO2 pump and cartridges along with a patch kit.

I wonder what leaders Dave and Sean have in mind this year on the Southern Tier tour. Southern Tier rider Dee Griffin shared the following story of his group's experience with flat tires, the story of Judge Dave and Flat Court.

Judge Dave Points in full regalia

From the journal of Dee Griffin:

"Later, after a lazy afternoon and a great dinner (sweet and sour pork with rice, followed by pecan pie), we had our first flat tire court.  Everyone logs in their flats on the flat board (I'm tied with Alannah with 3) but you can appeal any flat to the flat court. Jonathan appealed his case because he had bought a tube with "slime"  and it sealed itself after he pulled out the glass. There was a quite a bit of argument about what a "flat" consisted of and whether a puncture was sufficient or whether the tire had to be flat enough not to be ridden.  Judge Dave presided with wig and gavel (lots of banging on the table). We had a jury of four and Dan was the defending attorney. The jury finally voted 3 to 1 to find Jonathan innocent of the flat; however, there was some muttering about jury tampering since Jonathan was threatening to quit adjusting certain people's derailleurs if they voted against him. (Jonathan is a wonderful bike mechanic and has been taking care of all the bikes).  There were also some aspersions cast on the character of the defense attorney (to the effect that he had admitted that he had shaved with butt butter and therefore could not be trusted)."
