Adventure Cycling on Instagram.
Being slightly obsessed with Instagram, I jumped at the chance to get Adventure Cycling on board. It makes so much sense! Cyclists are taking inspiring/beautiful, hilarious/awesome pictures on their adventures and those with smart phones are sharing them on Instagram already. And we want a piece of that. We want to see those photos!
So we'll be there now.
Our name is @adventurecycling and we'd love to see you in the world of Instagram!
If you're taking your smart phone on your next bike adventure, tag your Instagram photos with things like #biketouring, #ACAtour, #adventurecycling, #bikeovernights, or #bikelove. (Those are the ones we search for the most to find bike enthusiasts.) And follow us! (Again, we're @adventurecycling)
We love seeing your adventures play out on the road and we'll keep you updated with how many visitors we are seeing and what Eddy Merckx thinks of our upcoming 2013 Calendar.
And if a smart phone isn't in your tool box, but you still want to follow along, you can take a look-see at Extragram.

DAVIS PHINNEY FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER
Wining and Dining in Australia's Barossa Valley
This week's Bike Overnight story was penned by Louise Sensi (left, in red and orange jersey) of the Clare Valley in South Australia. Louise writes beautifully about a winter cycling-and-wine-tasting trip she and Kerstin, the "Swiss Mountain Goat," made in the wine-abundant Barossa Valley.
"Leaving the car behind is a fantastic and slightly self-righteous sensation," Louise writes. "In Auburn we leave the southward-leading rail trail and strike out on a secondary road for another 7.5 miles west into Saddleworth. The road west quickly takes us up and over the hills that define the Clare Valley, and beyond those hills the rolling sheep pastures stretch out in a seemingly infinite fashion.
"... The hills grow perceptibly as we broach the lip of the Barossa Valley itself, and what else to do here except stop for lunch at a bakery and then escape a passing weather front by sampling the fine wines of Torbreck. I am quickly won over by their Grenache, but it is a Muscat called ?the bothie? which is packed into our saddlebags -- its smaller size and weight making it today?s winner."
Louise goes on to describe a riding day that dishes up a little bit of everything, weather-wise. Then, finally: "With the rain front mercifully crossing our path while we were happily sipping, the wet roads and quickly darkening day find us pedaling somewhat harder towards our hotel in Tanunda. We arrive, 58 miles from home, with numb fingers and toes to a less-than-warm reception by hotel staff; I suspect this impression has much to do with the much more enthusiastic reception we often experienced while traveling by bike in the States.
"I have to admit that I initially thought we should have spent this evening camping, in the true spirit of outdoor adventure. But with the heater switched on and a big bath full of steamy hot water waiting, I am very glad to leave the rapidly dropping temperature outside and slowly and deliciously defrost my happy but weary body."
The next day, content but tired, the pair pedals towards home.
"The wind and cold team up against us again; I tuck myself in behind the Swiss Mountain Goat and try to stay with her. The kilometers steadily click over, but we still must stop to refuel, this time with a traditional Swiss snack, ?Schoggi und Brot,? or chocolate and bread. Take a stick of really good quality chocolate and a fresh bread roll; using a (hopefully) clean finger, make a hole through the center of your bread, insert chocolate, and eat! It?s all about quality in Switzerland, and this little surprise package can be a quick gourmet delight if the quality is there.
"We are still 15 miles from home when the short days of winter start to bite. Riding out on these country roads at night is unsettling; there is no street lighting and the roads are narrow, rolling, and currently undergoing roadwork."
Learn how the story ends, and read more about Louise and Kerstin's gustatory adventures, at BikeOvernights.org. There you can also scroll through our archives of posted stories and Photos of the Week -- including this week's image, which comes from the July 30, 2012, post by Byron Rushing, Atlanta to Stone Mountain Park.

Chain Reaction Fresh Hops Festival
Come out and support Adventure Cycling at Draught Works Brewery's inaugural celebration of craft beer and sustainable transportation on Saturday, September 8, from 2 to 8 p.m. in Missoula, Montana.
At this fun-filled event, which includes bike helmet giveaways, bike tune-ups, a fleet of wacky bikes, bike safety information, raffles, and live music, Draught Works will craft a fresh-hopped beer with the help of Missoula bicycle enthusiasts!
The hops will be harvested that day by volunteers in Corvallis, MT, and transported to Draught Works by teams of cyclists in a relay-style race. At the brewery, eager cyclists will power a custom-made, bike-operated grain mill to process the grain. Once the grain milling concludes, Draught Works will add the hops and brew a bike-themed ale. Proceeds from the 15-barrel, 30-keg batch will be donated to participating nonprofit organizations including Adventure Cycling Association.
What: Draught Works Brewery's celebration of craft beer and sustainable transportation
When: Saturday, September 8, 2 - 8 p.m.
Where: Draught Works Brewery, 915 Toole Avenue, Missoula, MT, 406-541-1592
We hope to see you there!

New Development on Sierra Cascades Route
I then alluded to an exciting new development in that same area shared with us by Bil Paul, researcher for the route.
In a recent email, Bil happily reported to us that a new rail trail is in the works. The Great Shasta Rail Trail will be an 80-mile multi-use trail between McCloud and Burney mostly parallel to SR 89. We were thrilled to hear it!
This trail is still in the early stages of its creation and fundraising to buy the rail bed is a high priority. "We have two years (from March 2012) to raise the funds to purchase the property. We hope to do that in less time. Once we own the property we?ll start improving the infrastructure. We?ll probably focus on opening the parts of the trail closest to the two towns -- McCloud and Burney -- first. We?ll be posting information on our web site www.shastatrail.org so folks can follow our progress there and on our Facebook page," said April Gray, President of McCloud Local First Network, a nonprofit organization working to improve the local economy and one of five nonprofits working together to develop the trail.
Though plans do not include paving the trail, our hope is that it will remain well maintained like many of its rail trail counterparts across the country. Most bicycle travelers on this route will have a slightly more rugged set up allowing a comfortable ride on packed gravel and ought to find it a welcome break from riding on SR 89. Since it will stay relatively close to SR 89 and the towns along the way, services will be readily available from end to end.

Since the announcement of the Early, Epic, and Educational tours, we have been overwhelmed with more than 100 signups in the first two weeks. Our Florida LTC, Florida IRT, and Florida Winter Escape tours in January and February are nearly sold out with only a few slots remaining. Our ever-popular Death Valley rides are selling very well too.

The Next Big Thing: Making America Bicycle Friendly
Hey There! Just returned from the 2012 Pro Walk Pro Bike conference in Long Beach, California. It was a weeklong whirlwind of activity filled with bike rides, walks along the beach, massive amounts of networking and sessions, sessions, sessions.
I've had the weekend to think through the major ah-ha! moments of the conference and so I thought I would mention some major indicators of the 'next big thing' for a bicycle-friendly America.
Many cities get it. Wow, do they. Long Beach goes so far as to proclaim themselves "The Most Bicycle Friendly City in America" (via a plaque on city hall) -- but not because they are. In the words of Long Beach City Council Member Dr. Suja Lowenthal, "We call ourselves the most bicycle-friendly city in the US -- not out of hubris or a belief that we actually are ? It?s a continual reminder of what we want to be.?
Health researchers get it. Active living in the design and policies of our communities, both large and small is on record. Our planners, engineers and community leaders are taking note. Complete Streets is no longer a term no one has heard of, it is now a term that dominates the transportation lexicon.
So if we are creating cities with green lanes, completing networks in our cities and finding support in working in partnership with transit; if we are seeing how health relates to transportation -- what's left?
Well, I think we've only just begun to put the pieces of the puzzle together. In my mind, the next big thing in making our country more bicycle friendly is bicycle tourism.
Now I'm not just saying this because I want job security (though I do). I feel a movement galvanizing. It is growing in strength and voice: With numerous studies documenting economic impact, the growing number of bike tours, the countless advocates working to make bicycle-friendly communities, the natural resource agencies and local partners building more trails, and the tourism agencies that are pulling it all together in a package and selling their state as an active tourism destination.
No other part of the bicycling industry intersects more people and places than those that travel by bicycle. Think: Biking for both recreation AND transportation. There is no "end of bike lane." Bike travelers move through cities, towns, and counties and bridging jurisdictions without ever thinking about who owns the road. Now is the time for the bicycle movement -- from local advocates to national organizations -- to embrace and capitalize on the power of bicycle tourism. We need to work together to make the journey as seamless as possible; to make sure the leaders of our country know the power of this growing sector of the tourism industry; to make sure the transportation providers (airlines, trains, transit) see that accommodating bicycles is good for bottom lines and to make sure transportation policy doesn't hinder our success (we continue to rumble about rumble strips).
So where do we go from here?
We are interested in growing resources for the bicycle tourism industry. If you have a similar interest, I would welcome some conversation about what needs to be done and who needs to be doing it. I have started a Google group which you can be a part of. Just email me at gsullivanATadventurecyclingDOTorg.

Choosing a bike saddle for comfort
By: Zoey Lancaster
Choosing a bike saddle for comfortis fun and can be used for stress relief. The last thing a cyclist needs is an uncomfortable saddle, as this will make riding an unbearable experience. Some people think that saddle discomfort has to be tolerated, but a proper bike seat is all you need to enjoy the freedom, convenience and pleasures of bike riding. The shape of a saddle is important in accommodating your anatomy. Women?s bicycle saddles are wider than men?s due to their wider sit bones. For a saddle that fits you perfectly, you need to consider your build, age, gender, weight, type of biking and riding time. A good bicycle saddle should be able to support your body weight while you pedal, balance and steer. When you hit a bump or cycle over uneven surfaces, the saddle must absorb the shock without transferring it to you. This way, you will not feel any impact.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Cyclingchatcouk/~3/FErQcszh-2k/

Ending Your Cycling Season on a High Note
Inn-to-Inn
On our inn-to-inn self-contained trips, riders carry their gear, but there's a lot less of it because participants stay in hotels and eat in restaurants every night (no camping or group cooking gear needs to be carried).
- San Juan Ramble, Sept. 8-15
- Great Lakes Inn-to-Inn, Sept. 15-25
- Vermont Inn-to-Inn, Oct. 7- 3
Our van-supported tours, where all personal and group gear is transported by a vehicle each day, have 2 leaders and up to13 riders who camp most nights and share rotating cooking duties, akin to a self-contained trip but with the security and simplicity of van support. Tours are camping-based trips, with occasional indoor overnights.
- Grand Canyon Van I, Sept. 8-14
- Grand Canyon Van II, Sept. 16-22
- Big Bend Loop I, Oct. 20-28
Our fully-supported tours, where all personal and group gear is transported by a vehicle each day, have larger groups (typically between 40 and 90 riders) that camp together and enjoy catered meals. Fully-supported tours are camping-based trips, with occasional indoor overnights. Indoor lodging options are available at the participant's expense
- Freedom Flyer, Sept. 8-16
- Great Lakes Relaxed, Sept. 8-15
- Wine & Harvest, Sept 16-23
- C&O Canal/GAP, Sept. 29 - Oct. 6

On video: Motorist harasses cyclists in Colorado
I have to give credit to the cyclists for keeping their cool, not allowing the situation to escalate, and catching the whole thing on video. According to news reports, Dirk Friel and his friend were out for a bike ride this past Sunday when the motorist came up behind them and started blaring his horn. It's a narrow road with no shoulder ....

2013 Bicycle Travel Video Contest
I've been corresponding with Blanche van der Meer for the past 6 months on launching an online video contest to celebrate the booming trend in bike touring and travel documentaries. Blanche moderates the very successful WorldCycle Videos group on Vimeo, which has attracted more than 1,500 submissions! She has seen first-hand the growing enthusiasm for bicycle-travel videos.
In collaboration with WorldCycle Videos, Adventure Cycling's first Bicycle Travel Video Contest will begin accepting submissions on January 2, 2013. Now is the time to check out the submission categories and begin production, whether you plan an autumn bike overnight video shoot, tackle your footage from a past adventure, or set up an interview with a bicycle traveler who inspires you to document their passion and story in a portrait piece.
From January 2 through February 28, 2013, video submissions will be accepted in the following categories:
- Best Long Distance Tour Video: Submit your best narrative or experimental video about a long-distance bike tour. Submissions must not exceed 7 minutes in length.
- Best Bike Overnight Video: Submit your best narrative or experimental video about a 1-2 night bike tour. Submissions must capture the experience of a 1-2 night tour, not 1-2 nights of a longer tour, and must not exceed 3 minutes in length.
- Best Portrait of a Traveling Cyclist: Submit your best narrative or experimental video portrait of a touring cyclist. Self-portraits are acceptable. Submissions must not exceed 5 minutes.
All videos will also be eligible for the People's Choice Award, which will be awarded to the video with the most "likes" on Vimeo.
Over the next few months, we will share guest posts from our star-studded line up of judges with tips on telling bike-touring tales through video, along with some of their favorite pieces. These volunteer judges are all avid cycle-tourists and/or videographers and look forward to your submissions, they include:
- Blanche van der Meer, moderator of WorldCycle Videos on Vimeo and co-coordinator of the contest. You can submit videos to the WorldCycle Videos group on Vimeo anytime by the way. It's an amazing group featuring more than 1,500 touring videos shot at locations around the world. Check it out, you will definitely get inspired!
