More Wall Photos
As I wrote last week, walls have always fascinated me. It boggles my mind to imagine how many walls I've leaned my bike against. And the closer I get to a wall, the better I like the view. The photo above is from a temple in Luang Probang, Laos. I gazed up at this wall long enough to put a crick in my neck that lasted for days.
Many walls can look mundane from a distance. Their beauty is revealed only upon closer inspection. As in this wall in Colombia.
Or this one in Venezuela.
But there is always an exception. This photo reveals a not-so-spectacular wall of green. That is, until you step back.
When we rounded a corner in Madrid, the green wall literally took our breath away. The building to the left is CaixaForum, a post-modern art gallery.
The green wall is an art installation by French botanist Patrick Blanc secured to the wall of an adjacent building. A garden hanging in the air in one of the largest cities in Europe.
As much as I like walls. This is the only wall I've wanted to visit on a daily basis. I miss this wall. I want one in my city. And I promise not to lean my bike against it.

A Very Large Pannier: Arkel GT-54 Grand Touring Rear
To be fair, 3300 cubic inches may be a bit more space than some of us need for a rear pannier. When might such a large pannier be a good idea? Some folks find they like these panniers when they're riding a tandem and have less luggage space on their rear rack than they need for two people. Others take the GT-54's on a really long journey. Some people just like to bring a lot of stuff with them, and want extra space in case they find something neat! And there's always the off chance you'll want to stick a baby inside for easy transport. $399/pair, baby not included.

High Sticking
The young men in the photo above are stick dancers (pauliteiros in Portuguese). Kat and I saw them perform in the city of Coimbra in Northern Portugal. They perform a dance, dana dos paulitos, accompanied by a small band which you can hear in the audio clip. This type of dance has many relatives throughout the world (here are video clips from France, England, Spain, and India). There is just something about the rhythmic clacking of sticks that screams street festival.
Stick Dancers-Coimbra
Why do the young men have smiles on their faces? Because I'm not in their troupe. This type of dance requires a combination of rhythm and hand-eye coordination that is not in my genetic code. This was well documented in my career in little league where I never managed to get a hit.
If I were to attempt this dance, there would be much yelling and cursing from my fellow dancers, as my stick connected with flesh rather than wood. My partner would be the one with swollen knuckles and bandages on his head.
There is slightly less pain in the world because I took up bicycle touring, rather than stick dancing.

Brick by Brick: Building Bicycle Travel
Adventure Cycling is growing! Half of our old building here in Missoula, Montana, is off limits to staff and visitors as builders work tirelessly to remove the old asbestos insulation, bring the energy efficiency up to the standards of the day, and most importantly -- add another 1, 400 square feet in the form of a brand-new second story. With the addition, our offices will reach 6,600 square feet, making more room for people and programs. We hope to add an additional 10 to 14 staff members over time.
Now before we start accepting applications, we have to first complete our building project. This is a big undertaking for any nonprofit, but we know that in the long run the extra space will mean we can provide new and improved services for our members and the cycling community as a whole. This is the point where you come in (no, not as the newest member of our cartography staff, not yet anyhow). We are offering our dedicated and supportive members an opportunity to become a part of the future of Adventure Cycling?s headquarters. If you donate today, your name can be featured on our new building for the entirety of our organization?s life here.
Wouldn't it be fun to show your children/grandchildren/parents/friends your name on the wall of this bicycle mecca when you cycle through Adventure Cycling?s headquarters on your ride across America? We anticipate greeting thousands of cyclists this summer and each and every one of them can pose for a photo next to their name on our donor wall. Consider making a gift to our building in exchange for an indelible mark on the wall of our future home.
I look forward to seeing you all this summer. Don?t forget to put July 6th on your calendars -- the day of our building open house block party. Thanks all, and keep on pedaling!

Get Ready to Energize the Future!
Are you (or is someone you know) looking for an unforgettable educational experience this summer? The Wild Rockies Field Institute may be your answer! This amazing institute is offering seven courses for college credit this year ranging from sea kayaking to bicycle touring -- so get out out of the classroom and into adventure!
The class we're most excited about is their Cycle the Rockies: Energy and Climate Change in Montana course, which runs from May 17 - June 12. Here's a description of what the course entails:
"Students on this course will explore Montana by bicycle while studying the ecological, social, and economic issues associated with energy production and use. We will traverse rolling plains and beautiful mountains, enjoying the changing landscapes and meeting with people deeply involved in energy and climate issues. Traveling by bicycle will give us a unique perspective and an appropriate pace for examining the past, present and future of energy and climate change in the West.
Montana offers prime examples of current energy production facilities, from traditional fossil fuel energy sites to exciting alternative technologies for producing power. Our route begins in eastern Montana at oil refineries and a coal-fired power plant in the industrial core of Billings. Then we will pedal north and west through grasslands and island mountain ranges on the central plains, visiting energy-efficient buildings and production sites for biofuels, and wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric power along the way.
After meetings with energy and climate policy experts at the state capitol in Helena, we will turn north along the impressive Rocky Mountain Front to Glacier National Park. We?ll cycle over the Continental Divide, spending time with climate scientists and park managers in Glacier before ending in Whitefish with a public presentation.
Among the things we will do along the way:
- Visit facilities using or producing biodiesel, wind energy, solar power, geothermal heating, and biofuels.
- Examine fossil fuel technologies and impacts at coalfields, power plants, and oil refineries.
- Tour a hydroelectric dam.
- Visit ranchers, land managers, and farmers who are facing the impacts of climate change along with various opportunities for energy production.
- Meet local and state officials working on state energy and climate policy.
- Explore "green" energy-efficient buildings in Billings and Central Montana.
- Talk with Glacier National Park scientists about the regional impacts of global warming.
- Read and discuss a wide selection of current articles on energy issues and climate change.
- Complete academic assignments designed to integrate our experiences and learning.
- Present experiences and learning in open forums using electronic media and public presentations.
- Become competent bicycle travelers.
This is an amazing way to both expand your knowledge of energy options and learn or expand your knowledge of self-contained bicycle touring; the instructors and staff on this course are top-of-the-line. This is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In the immortal words of Levar Burton, you don't have to take our word for it -- check out their great blog, written on the road by participants. Even if you don't take their course, it makes for some wonderful reading! If you're interested in finding out more information, it is all available on their website.
Don't wait! If you or someone you know is looking for a great educational adventure this summer, take advantage of this amazing opportunity which is limited to only 10 spaces. As an added bonus, all of the participants will receive a free one-year membership to Adventure Cycling!
