Chris Horner out of Tour de France 2011

Chris Horner appears to have broken his nose and suffered a concussion with the nasty crash on stage 7 of the TDF that separated the main field about 37 mi from the finish. A concussion is a “jarring” of the brain caused by head trauma with the severity often being related to the time of [...]

World Cycle Racing Grand Tour finds cyclists in Europe, North and South America

The 9 endurance cyclists who set off a little more than a week ago (Feb. 18) for an around the world bicycle race from London are already spread across three continents.

Most of the cyclists in the World Cycle Racing Grand Tour are heading eastward on various routes across Europe, while two others are heading the opposite direction in North and South America.

While its tough to determine the leader because they'll all taking different routes, Mike Hall has racked up the most miles as of Monday -- 1,493.

Adventure Cycling in the News, February 2012

Recently we've had some great media coverage of Adventure Cycling Association. Here are some highlights.

As you may have heard, the bike-travel mecca (our world headquarters here in Missoula) is expanding! Big thanks to the Missoulian, our local daily paper, for their recent report on our building efforts. For a fun glimpse at this historic transformation, check out our Flickr slideshow of the building remodel!

The Missoulian also recently ran a wonderful profile of our new tours director, Arlen Hall. The story begins: Arlen Hall was pedaling alone in the Deep South when the driver of a big green pickup truck came up honking behind him.Hall, who is black, had tried to get some friends to join him on the Mississippi bicycle tour to be safe. Instead, he turned alone to face the driver blaring the horn of the truck, maybe an old Ford. That encounter in Canton, Miss., would turn the solo bicycle ride into the most important trips, he has ever taken.  Keep reading, it's a riveting and moving story about how bicycle touring connects the past and present for Hall, another inspiring take on bike travel.

Bicycle Retailer and Industry News recently published an annual review of cycling nonprofits by Doug McClellan, "Industry nonprofits roll through tough times." Given the tough climate we're doing pretty well and we're very grateful for the generous support of our members and donors. To learn more about our recent record-breaking year, check out the news release roundup of this last fiscal year, "2011 Caps Decade of Growth for Adventure Cycling Association." Again, thanks for your support!

I got a chance to contribute to the "Overcoming Commuting Obstacles" (PDF) feature in Bicycle Times' February issue. My contribution, which hopes to help cyclists overcome "There's no good way to get there by bike" obstacle, is on page 37. As an experienced commuting cyclist who has ridden in all types of urban environments, it turns out that I search for commuting route based on some of the same criteria I would use to plan a route for a bike tour.

Speaking of touring! "The Mystique of Route 66," David Lamb's piece on the revival of this iconic route from Chicago to LA, appeared in the February issue of Smithsonian magazine, giving special mention to our next long-distance cycling route: Bicycle Route 66 (due out in late 2014).

Nine endurance bicyclists rolled out of London on Saturday for the first-ever around-the-world bicycle race.

They're seeking to complete their globe-girdling rides by the July 27 start of the Olympics Games in London. Perhaps they'll set a Guinness World Record along the way.

Map Chronicles

It's hard to put into words why Adventure Cycling Association's maps are so great.
- Yes, they show the attractions that are around the corner.
- Yes, they take you to the (safer) roads less traveled.
- Yes, they give you a heads up for big climbs and sweet downhills.

But beyond the helpful features of Adventure Cycling's maps, there's just something about traveling by bicycle with trusty maps as your guide that changes the experience. That's what I am supposed to explain with our first-ever Map Chronicles.

As a graphic designer, my instructions were, "We want you to design a catalog sort of thing featuring a selection of our maps. We want it to create the feeling of being there, of traveling with Adventure Cycling maps."

No pressure. Just translate the allure of bicycle travel, by map, into a publication.

Well somehow it all came together. With help from almost every department (especially routes and mapping), and written by the ever-inspiring Mac McCoy, this first-time project was a success!

It was so much of a success, that we've had requests to make it available online for the whole internet to see. Voil!

We hope you enjoy the Map Chronicles, but more so, we hope you find the drive and the time to go adventuring by bicycle. And if you do, I'm sure we have a map for that...

Holiday Campaign Wrap Up

Every holiday season the nonprofit world explodes with appeals for end of year gifts. Adventure Cycling is no exception and in November we began work to send our annual Holiday Campaign letter out to our members and friends. We are very excited to report to our community of supporters that we had a phenomenal response to our Holiday Campaign and match challenge.

Through mail, email, our blog, and Facebook, Adventure Cycling shared with you some of our members? stories about how bicycle travel made them braver, healthier, and more confident people. Many of you responded with gifts that will inspire more people to travel by bike. Thank you all for digging deep and responding with record donations!

Through the months of November and December, we attempted to meet a match of $68,000 contributed by a group of generous supporters. Our members responded to this challenge with amazing results. All $68,000 were matched, raising a total of $137,841 in 851 individual donations.

Your humbling generosity and support continues to grow our programs. Thanks to you, we are able to produce more maps, lead more tours, advocate for better bicycle funding, and encourage more people to travel by bike for fun, fitness, and self-discovery. Have a happy 2012 and we hope to see you all in the coming bicycle-travel season.

Keep your eyes on your mailboxes for an exciting way to be involved in our new, improved headquarters building. We are adding 1,400 square feet, and every inch is going to be chock-full of bicycle-touring resources just for you!

Why should I buy a folding bike!

For your typical city occupant folding bikes usually are the most appropriate way to get around. With a lot of Londoners living in flats and apartments with little if any storage space a foldable bicycle is going to be much more convenient when compared to a standard sized cycle. The bikes fold up rapidly and are generally small enough to be tucked away in the home or taken on trains and buses during the particular times that ordinary cycles are restricted on account of passenger over crowding. Folding bikes can in fact be taken on the tube system, taken on buses and even taken on Croydon's Tram link system. Officially the bikes may need to be in a small bag but in practice Transport for London rarely enforce this and if they do then a pair of black bin liners will suffice. A folder will permit a person to circumvent the train companies' cycle restrictions and you could actually take your folding bike home in a minicab on a Friday night following a few bevies at the pub! There are plenty of different kinds of folding bicycles available, from leading manufacturers including Dahon, Brompton and Pashley.

All That Saz

There are certain places on this planet where I've cycled that will always have a soundtrack associated with them. Not the traditional soundtrack of a film, but the sounds directly associated with the location.

Lake Van is located in Eastern Turkey, near the border of Iran. Not many touring cyclists get out this way, but those who do are rewarded with stunning scenery. The Armenian church in the photo above is located on Akdamar Island and was originally built in the 10th century.

Lake Van is not only the largest lake in Turkey, but is also an endorheic lake. It doesn't flow to the sea and has few outlets. Its waters are so alkaline, you can wash your clothes with no need for soap.

Kat and I took a ferry out to Akdamar Island, and there met a group of Kurdish students on holiday from university. They invited us to share lunch with them, and one of the students pulled out a saz (the name refers to a family of stringed instruments). He played alone for awhile and then some of his friends began to sing: Student Playing the Saz

It was a unique sound to our ears. As unique as our surroundings. To this day, every time I hear a saz played, I see a vast blue lake, a 10th century cathedral, a group of Kurdish students, and a landscape I'll never forget.

Here is another recording featuring the saz (ba?lama in Turkish). This was a trio in Western Turkey: Trio Near Efes (Ephesus)

This prize is awarded to the person who attracts the most new members to Adventure Cycling. Thank you for sharing the inspiration with others!

Congratulations to all of our winners!
