1984 Bike Tour: Day 48 - Like being south of the border

SANTA FE, N.M. - Most of the day, I felt that I was no longer cycling through the US, but had slipped south of the border. The Hispanic culture here, mixed with the Native American, is very strong.

For instance, after Penasco, we followed a road that reminded me of cycling in the Alleghenies because it rose and fell like a rollercoaster. We passed through some towns, such as Las Trampas, that had a mission older than most of the Colonial era buildings back home in historic Annapolis. ...

Riding Conditions on Route Maps

Based on some of the phone calls and emails we get, it seems to me the "Riding Conditions" section on our route network maps is often overlooked. Probably not on purpose; I mean, you just bought a map, right? So you open it up and are looking at the maps, and you can get engrossed in seeing where you are heading. Who wants to read text at that point, when you can see where the turns are and all the other fine details found on a map panel? However, reading the "Riding Conditions" is worth your time, I promise.

You will find the "Riding Conditions" in the same block of text as "Using this Map" and "Climate." This block of information is usually on the same side of the map as the "Service Directory." The Tidewater Potomac Heritage Bicycle Route, Underground Railroad Bicycle Route and the downloadable pdf maps are exceptions to this set up and the "Riding Conditions" location will vary. On the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, the "About Map A" and "About Map B" boxes take the place of "Riding Conditions."

On average, we have about 400 words per map section to tell you about things not necessarily represented on the map panels. A route researcher compiles first rendition of this information, while subsequent editions incorporate feedback we've received from cyclists who've ridden the route. The most vital points are related to safety and knowledge about the situations you will encounter on the route. Specific items include:
  • The presence of little to no shoulders, unavoidable high traffic areas, poor road surfaces, and exceptionally long distances between services.
  • We warn you about roads you do not want to use as a shortcut, no matter how appealing they may appear when viewed on paper.
  • If there is an alternate or spur on the route, we give a brief description of it, including distance and reasons why you might want to use it over the main route, as applicable.
  • As space permits, we also list additional map resources that you might find helpful on your tour, especially in urban areas.
Before you hit the road on your tour, I highly recommend reading over the route's "Riding Conditions." We do the best we can to compile relevant information to make your trip enjoyable and safe. And if you have feedback for future map editions, send it to us via the usual methods: map correction cards (mail a postcard or submit online), email through the website, or send us a tweet at @acaroutes. Many thanks in advance!

Bicycle lane construction gets bigger bang for the buck

Last winter I wrote about a report that found construction of bike lanes and paths in Baltimore created more jobs per $1 million than road construction.

The author of that report, Heidi Gerrett-Peltier, has expanded her research to 58 projects in 11 cities, including Seattle, and found that her original findings hold true.

"Bicycling infrastructure creates the most jobs for a given level of spending," she writes in Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure: A National Study of Employment Impacts.

The report compares job creation for road construction and rehabilitation, building new multi-use trails, widening roads to include bikes lanes ...

Bicycling the Borders of Afghanistan ? in America

T.B.F.D. is short for ?Traversing a Foreign Border Domestically,? and that?s exactly what Joseph Bigley is doing right now.

Bigley, a visual artist and art instructor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, is tracing a route of roughly 3,500 miles that approximates the size and shape of Afghanistan. His ride began at ground zero in New York City on May 12 and will end there around July 20. He?s pedaling approximately 75 miles per day, sometimes on pavement and at other times on gravel, riding solo and unsupported. Because the borders of Afghanistan are irregular and jagged, so is his route ? he sometimes makes as many as 120 turns in a day. Aboard a Trek bicycle, Bigley is pulling a hand-built trailer that he says serves as a "symbol of sovereignty.? He?s also giving presentations along the way at contemporary art and social science venues.

Bigley's performance-art project, as outlined at his website, is a symbolic act designed to "gauge public opinion of the conflict in Afghanistan as well as to point at the curious nature of the idea of national political boundaries.?

At this page you can see Bigley?s approximate route ? and the outline of Afghanistan ? superimposed on a map of the eastern United States.

Fellow Cyclists ? Stranger or Friend?

There are sometimes when you are cycling down a busy A road, cars and lorries squeezing past at 50mph – not a cyclist in sight, and you start to wonder ‘why am I the only person cycling here?’ In some areas of Britain, cyclists can be so rare on the road it feels a little disconcerting. And if nothing else you’d like to see a cyclist just for the irrational re-assurance, bikes haven’t been banned on this particular stretch of road. Motorists cocooned in their warm and comfortable cars are effectively another species, there is no empathy between their experience and yours. If I see a cyclist going the other way, I will invariably nod, smile or briefly wave. I don’t expect anything back, I’m just glad to know someone else is ploughing the same furrow. If nothing else, at least you know a fellow cyclist isn’t going to try and muscle you off the road, beep at you or shout out of the window for not cycling on a non-existent cycle path. Catching up a Cyclist in the Road Then there are the times when you catch up with a cyclist going in the same direction. This provokes a [...]

Day 44 - Using a pickup instead of bikes to Mesa Verde; bad move

DURANGO, COLO. - Note to self: If you're touring by bicycle, stay on the bicycle.

We've just returned from a strange and troubling adventure involving our reliance on a pickup truck we borrowed for the day. We're all safe and sound, but it could have turned out much worse.

Bruce and I had planned to take today off and take a $25 guided tour to the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, about an hour's drive away. The hosteler said we could do it cheaper if we rented a car, and what's more, a German hostel guest, Christiane, could go with us and make it back by her 4:30 bus ride out of town.

A guy from across the street who hangs around to drink the coffee here did that one better, and offered us the use of a pickup truck he had just purchased from a local mining company. We took him up on the offer...

Keeping Dry While Touring

Just because we're moving into summer doesn't mean that you're in the clear as far as rain is concerned. Getting soaked is one thing, but getting yourself and all of your gear drenched can really dampen your mood. Fortunately, staying dry doesn't require a ton of additional gear that will fill up your panniers/trailers when the sun is out. Here's a quick rundown on some solid rain gear for your body and equipment.

Rain Jacket: This can be as pricey or as inexpensive as you like, but the nice thing about summer storms is that you generally don't have to worry about a lot of insulation or heavy duty fabrics, as long as you stay dry. The Shower's Pass Club Pro jacket is a great summer rain jacket with a lot of features to keep you from overheating, such as a back vent and pit zips. The color itself provides good visibility, but just to make sure, they've added a lot of reflective material to help you stand out in heavy overcast conditions. If you're on a budget, I'm a big fan of the simple clear vinyl cape, such as the Performance Clear Rain Jacket for $20. It isn't fancy, but it gets the job done.

Rain Pants: I always remember rain pants at the last minute, and I'm always happy to have them. There are few things worse than riding in a wet chamois. I've been a huge fan of the Showers Pass Storm Pants, which pack down very well. They also have angled Velcro straps at the ankle mid-calf, which ensures that they won't get caught in any moving parts on the bike.

Panniers: If you don't have waterproof panniers, Arkel makes some great rain covers that stand up to a lot of abuse. You can pack them away when the rain isn't coming down, or leave them attached at all times to make yourself a little more visible. One great feature is the outside mesh pocket, which you can toss your rain jacket and pants into to dry out when the storm passes. They also cinch down pretty well for a tight, uniform fit.

Trailers: Dry bags are a really good option for trailers, and if you have a BOB trailer, you may already be covered with their optional cargo bag. With water resistant trailers, such as the Burly Nomad, you may be able to get away with simply tossing select gear in garbage or grocery bags.

This should keep you in pretty good shape for those unexpected storms. Still, my favorite maneuver is to find some good company, grab a hot beverage, and wait it out.

Why use a Heart Rate Monitor?

What Should my Heart Rate be During Exercise? Article by; David Ertl (Cycle coach) This is a very common question I hear and how I wish I had a simple, easy answer, but unfortunately there isn't. It depends on your natural heart rate, the shape you are currently in, and what your fitness goals are. So let me try to explain and give you some guidelines to ensure that you are exercising at an intensity that is safe but also will improve your fitness. Heart rate is a very individual thing. Some people have very low resting heart rates and others have very fast resting and exercising heart rates. There is a formula that is very often used to estimate your exercising heart rate zones. Take 220 and subtract your age. Thisestimates your maximum heart rate. Then you should exercise at some percentage of this maximum heart rate depending on your goals.

Effect of Beetroot Juice on Performance

Recently, I wrote about various scientific studies which suggested beetroot juice had a beneficial impact on cycling performance. Suitably impressed, I decided to hold my very own, not quite as scientific, study. This week, I paid 3.50 for a bottle of organic beetroot juice from Holland & Barrett. I drank the beetroot juice for four days before a 10 mile time trial on Sat, 18th June. The course was the F20/10 in Hertfordshire. I finished in first place with a time of 20.07. This was a new personal best at 10 miles (previous was 20.09 last year on U47). It was also over 1 minute quicker than my previous two 10 mile time trials (I did 21.13 and 21.17 this year) Scientific Conclusions of this Unique Study Beetroot Juice definitely turns your urine pink. Organic Beetroot juice is expensive and doesn’t even taste nice, for want of a better description it tastes like highly concentrated beetroot. What about Performance? A minute quicker than previous 10 mile time trials is encouraging. Unfortunately, the time trials are not comparable. The courses are different. The F20/10 is flat and the turn is really quick. Yesterday, it was a windy evening, but it felt [...]

Where To Rent A Bicycle On Your Travels

One of the easiest and most liberating ways to travel by bicycle is traveling without a bicycle ? renting, that is. For many, renting a bike after arriving at a destination is the perfect solution.

If you have ever considered traveling to a far-off land and renting a bicycle once you arrived there, the following is a short breakdown of some of the places you might find a bicycle for rent.

Bike Shops: A great place to start is the local bike shop. The shop itself may have some bicycles on hand that they can rent out for the day, week, or month ... or, if that doesn?t work, the shop may be able to point you in the direction of another business or individual that can rent you a bicycle.

Travel Agencies: In many countries, the local tourist/travel agencies often have bicycles for rent. Their selection of bicycles is often limited to just a handful, if that. But these small offices are certainly worth a try.

Train and Bus Stations: In many bicycle friendly countries (like Switzerland, for example), the train and bus stations are a good place to ask about renting a bicycle. Many of the more popular stops have a wide variety of bikes on hand that you can rent by the hour or by the day.

Bicycle Kiosks: A growing trend in large cities, like London and Vienna, is that of bicycle kiosks ? unmanned stations where bicycles can be rented with the swipe of a credit card. These kiosks work like gigantic vending machines, where you specify a certain amount of money to be charged, and out pops a bicycle for your use. Most charge by the hour or by the day, but in some cases the bikes can be kept for longer durations. Some city kiosks even allow you to borrow one of their bicycles for 30 to 60 minutes free of charge ? as long as you get the bike back to another kiosk in the allotted time period.

Bicycle Touring Companies: All around the world are large and small bicycle touring companies in the business of renting out bicycles and taking customers on tours of varying lengths. Whether or not you plan to go on one of the guided (or self-guided) tours with a company, you can often rent a bicycle from them and set off on your own.

Bicycle Rental Companies: Beaches and other tourist areas are popular places for bicycle rental businesses. Designed to cater to people like you, they've often got a whole stash of bicycles on hand for rent.

Online Rental Companies: In some parts of the world, you may not be able to find anyone willing or able to rent you the type of bicycle that you want or need. In this case, there are a number of online bicycle rental companies that will deliver the bicycle of your choice to your starting destination (whether that is your home base or some other address), and you simply box the bike up and ship it back to the company once you are finished with it.

Borrowing a Bike: Finally, there is always the option of simply borrowing a bicycle from a local individual. In many of the more remote regions of the world, this may be your only option, in fact. And while this may sound less than ideal, borrowing a bicycle from a native is a great way to meet someone new and, at the same time, get a super-low price on your rental bike.

Riding Socially

The truth of the matter is that I'm a shy person. I'm a friendly person, I'm just shy. I feel nervous around new people, and it takes me awhile to think of things to say. Sometimes I blurt out really awkward things at first, just to top it all off. Needless to say, doing the traditional things new friends do isn't that appealing to me: sitting around over a cup of coffee trying to think of conversation topics is basically a fate worse than death.

Bike rides are another story. For me, social bike rides are perfect for making new friends. Ideal for groups or duos, the bike ride really is, in my opinion, the perfect social outing. Everyone can enjoy being outside, chatting as they feel like it, and reveling in their mutual adoration of the bicycle. At least you know you have that in common!

There are a few things to keep in mind when you're going on a social ride. Try to pick an area that's not super trafficky, so you can ride close to your friends and talk to them. Ride at a conversational pace that everyone can savor. Social rides aren't the time to show off how hard you've been training, by dropping your new buddies while you ride away laughing.

I'm sure lots of you have social riding hints. Let me know what they are!
