Sarah Raz is Adventure Cycling's shipping specialist, but don't think she's just packing your orders. She also handles our outreach program, writes the 'Open Road' piece in Adventure Cyclist each month, a blog post each week, and deals with me both at work and at home. That's a lot to take on! To spotlight Sarah, I'm going to commandeer her blog slot this week with a quick interview.
Q: Sarah, you ship out a ton of gear to cyclists five days a week. Aside from maps, what's the hot item in sales?
A: People are really into bike packing this year, so the Revelate items are going like hotcakes. Their stuff is a really neat alternative to the classic pannier or trailer, and the Tour Divide is coming up in just about a month, so it's especially big right now.
Q: You've also written quite a few 'Open Road' articles over the years. Of the ones you have written, is there one that stands out in your mind?
A: I love writing the 'Open Road Gallery.' Working with Greg and getting to delve into the stories of traveling cyclists is one of my very favorite parts of my job. I really enjoyed this piece about Chester Bennett, that I wrote in 2010. Chester filmed his tour on an 8mm camera. When people asked if he was afraid or lonely, Chester explained that he was too tired to be scared and too free to be lonely.
Q: I happen to know that you're a person who loves music. If Adventure Cycling had a theme song, and you got to pick it out, what would you go with?
A: For Adeventure Cycling, I have to pick an artist that came of age in the 70's because that's when we started. Let's go with 'Long May You Run' by Neil Young.
Q: That's much better than what I had in mind. Can you think of a good song for our adventures?
A: I know that probably Lou Reed had something different in mind when he wrote this song, but I'd like to think that 'Perfect Day' will describe a lot of our outdoor adventures. It's just so fun being outside all the time with you and never having to shower!
Q: Speaking of adventures, do you remember asking me last week about my dream tour in an interview for the blog? I think I said something about riding from Alaska to Banff, and then taking the Great Divide route down to Mexico.
A: Oh, yeah, I remember that.
Q: Well, I hope your not mad, but I may have booked a pair of plane tickets to Fairbanks, Alaska, purchased the Great Divide route maps, and possibly, maybe definitely, posted our jobs on the Adventure Cycling employment page.
A: That's crazy! We would have to leave in just a few weeks! But I'm not mad.
Q: Phew, I'm glad you're not mad! Now that we've got that out of the way, I was thinking people might want to follow us on our adventure ... Let's be honest, they're going to want to follow you. Anyway, can you think of a good way they can do that, if they so desire?
A: Well, we can post our progress and photos on a site. Let's call it, realbigfun.tumblr.com.
