An appealing little tool arrived in my email the other day I thought worth sharing. Eat Well Everywhere from Sustainable Table is part of the Eat Well Guide. The guide is a compilation of "25,000+ hand picked, locally-grown listings." The businesses listed support sustainable agriculture and include farmer's markets, restaurants and cafes, and lodging establishments. I think it could be used to help plan a trip for those interested in making healthy, sustainable choices for eating while on the road.
I played with the travel map tool a bit by entering in some destinations on the Adventure Cycling Route Network. The system found seven listings over the 291 miles between Pueblo, Colorado and Alexander, Kansas on the TransAmerica Trail and a whopping 13 listings over the 181 miles between Florence, Oregon and Crescent City, California on the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route.
While it was cool to see what showed up, it was a little disappointing that their map doesn't act a bit more like the standard Google Map mostly in that you can't change or specify the route, you've got to go with what the map shows. (This may be due to limitations put on them by Google.)
If you don't mind setting up an online account, you will gain the ability to save the information from from your search results to a pdf document for reference. [note: I attempted this and couldn't get it to work in Chrome or Safari but it sounds like a good idea.]
One thing that will help Sustainable Table make the travel map tool even better, is having more entries to list. They accept suggestions and discuss the criteria they follow for including businesses. Suggest away!
On the whole, this tool is geared to an automobile road trip. However, if their goal is to support sustainability, hearing from bicycle travelers about what would be useful to them might engender changes in future versions. I consider it an interesting tool to investigate and wish them well.
