Why do people hate cyclists?

The question posed in the headline has probably flitted through the mind of many a cyclist after an encounter with an angry driver, who saw the cyclist as simply a pesky impediment to speed. Jim Saksa, writing this week in … Continue reading

Fibre Flare bike light review

The truth and the bike.

We are all guilty of it. We get entrenched in the monotony of the bike. We get to our group rides, we pedal, we suffer, we blow snot, we stare at the wheel in front of us, we tough it out, we train. I love the grit and the romance. It has almost a cathartic rhythm to it all. Holiday Wish List

When I was a child I made wish lists of all the things I wanted my parents to give me for Christmas and Hannukah. Lucky me, with a Baptist mother and Jewish father, I got to celebrate both holidays. I remember getting my first bike, a purple Huffy, and running outdoors in my pajamas and socks to ride it around the neighborhood. Over the years many items appeared on my list: Barbies, New Kids on the Block albums, a CD player, new bikes (always), and, of course, a pony. And a new puppy. I should stop myself now. You get it though, there were many things I wanted that I felt, as a child, I couldn't live without.

As an adult now, with the holidays and new year approaching, of course there are things that I want, but more importantly I contemplate all the great things I wish for the world. Many of my wishes are about a bicycle-friendly world and some are just about bicycles.
Adventure Cycling has a wish list too. Except our wishes are more than just wishes. They are goals that, with your support, will be achieved.

We envision a future in which:

  • Everyone is aware of the amazing power of traveling by bicycle.
  • Cyclists are inspired to explore landscapes and cultures for fun, fitness, and self-discovery.
  • Everyone has easy access to a national network of bicycle routes.
  • Barriers to bicycle travel are eliminated.
  • Everyone has the information and tools necessary to travel successfully by bicycle.
  • Bicycle tourism is a thriving part of the economy.

You can help these wishes become a reality by making a donation to our Holiday Campaign today. This year, our Holiday Trailblazers (donors who have come together to create a match challenge) will match all gifts 1:1. If you give a donation that is at least 25% greater than your annual gift last year, they will match it 2:1!* All gifts must be received by December 31st to qualify for the match, so please donate today.

For more information on how we intend to make this vision a reality, check out our 2012 strategic plan.

Thank you for your support.

*2:1 match amount listed in 2012 Holiday Campaign package. You may also email development@adventurecycling.org or call Alex at (406) 532-2779 or Amanda at (406) 532-2775 to determine your 2:1 match amount.

One Big Circle: The first 90 Degrees

The loop sounded awesome, 160 miles of single track and logging roads around Missoula, MT, typically accomplished in 24 hours, hmmm .... well, maybe not?

Most folks who know me know that I love sleep, I kind of worship it, I mean I daydream about my down comforter, so the whole 24-hour test of endurance wasn't going to fly. Not to mention needing to ride my bike through the night, and oh yeah the stats: 34,000 feet of elevation gain, including summiting an almost 8,000 ft high point, and riding 160 miles of single-track, all in 24 hours, yeah right! Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm a couch potato, actually this route was very enticing, I have lived in Missoula for over 11 years, and never experienced some of these quintessential rides.  And heck, at any point on the route we would technically be no more than 10 miles from my cozy bed, as the crow flies, that is, and at a few points along the journey we would cross some main roads and services, so technically there were lots of 'outs', and even a few re-supply points.   However, I really had no intention of entering the 24-hour pain cave ....  ever, well maybe...

Most folks who know Bill know that he can endure lots, and lots of pain.  And this route was strictly Bill's, known as the Remember Marcy Vision Quest (RMVQ). Carefully designed for various reasons to take in the local 'high points', to be a 24-hour test of endurance (that's the pain part), and most importantly to honor a friend, Marcy.  Granted Bill is known for his 'bicycling madness' but there was just no way I could even begin to follow him on a traditional RMVQ journey. This route is beefy! However, the lore of it had me hooked and I really wanted to test my multi-day chops, not to mention just have a great adventure by bicycle, and in my own backyard to boot. In 2010 Bill rode this route in 23 hours, for me this feat is truly spectacular, and I cannot even comprehend it, it blinds me and weakens me just thinking about it.  But, I was in luck, I think, Bill was willing to accommodate a team effort and this year we would inaugurate the first RMVQ bikepack edition! And of course, there was absolutely NO WAY I could complete the journey in 24 hours, so we settled on me needing 4 days (no laughing). No problem, right?

We started Mo style,* well, sort-of, taking off at the Blue Mountain trail head around 11am. The day was a gift -- beautiful fall weather, not too brisk, and the Salsas (Bill's fatty and my El Mariachi) seemed to fit all our gear; tent, sleeping bags, pads, coffee (we actually forgot the coffee), 4 days of food, water, etc. With a shake-down cruise through the parking lot we headed up the trails to the first check-point, Blue Mountain Lookout, to post the first picture of Marcy and to 'check-in' along the route. Everything was going well, sort-of, Bill had a 'loose' bottom bracket, and the steep hills required equal amounts of energy pushing the loaded bike as well as preventing myself from sliding back down the hill.**  I mentally checked-off the 'ignorance is bliss' theory as still being true (someday it will officially become a proof), and pushed/slipped onward. This first day was hard but the magnitude and expanse of the Grave Creek Range was awe-inspiring, I had never been on these trails and the newness (ignorance) ruled the stage for me that day.

With both darkness and drizzle descending, I had to make my first executive decision of the trip: to stop and set-up camp for the night. I wasn't going to make it across the valley as hoped, but Bill was super supportive and a true powerhouse (he would have just kept on going, but I  think he felt like he was killing me). I was fine, I was outside and riding/hiking my bike, I never wanted 'to be' anywhere else that day, but I needed food and sleep.  So, with city lights twinkling down below we filled our bellies, and drifted to sleep in the soft fall air, doubts rumbled like sliding gravel in my head, I wasn't exactly sure I could pull-off another 128 miles, 30,615 ft of climbing in the remaining 3 days ... but I had embodied 'ignorance is bliss' and the 'one day at a time' attitude: sleep first, then pancakes in the valley tomorrow morning, everything would be fine ...

Please stay tuned for another 90 degrees of RMVQ fun, the second day challenged my sitting power, but we had a BBQ to attend in the Rattlesnake ....  would we (I) make it?

The Odd Science of Cycling

Interesting article and video here at the Guardian [link]. A guy with Parkinsons lost the ability to walk, but he could still ride a bicycle . The explanation is something to do with something how the brain functions. It made me think of a slightly tangential point about how cycling can make you feel like [...]

America ByCycle: Starting off with a Sh'Bang

As I mentioned in my last column, this fall, Michelle Cassel and Ryan MacAfee of America ByCycle are cycling the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route, capturing the stories and spirit of the route on video. You can follow their trip by tuning into the video series they are producing from the road. It's a great opportunity to squeeze in an extra bike tour, albeit vicariously.

Watch episode 3, Starting Off with a Sh'Bang, for a wonderfully unpredictable ride through a day-in-the-life of a bicycle tour, and to learn just how circus performers spend their down time. I expected the fire, but not the crazy bike-car race!

Coast Protocol Episode 3: Starting Off With a Sh'Bang! from America ByCycle on Vimeo.

Episode 4, featuring the bike and beer scene in Portland, Oregon, will be ready soon!

The Faces of Bicycle Travel #2

People. The true treasures of bicycle travel.

Mexico, 1991

We are lying down on the cool tile floor of the kitchen. The smell of fresh tortillas mingles with perfume. A conversation on the side of the road while cycling down the Baja Peninsula led to an invitation to Adriano?s place in La Paz.

What I thought would be a single night?s stay turned out to be nine days as I helped Adriano and his brothers run their food booth during Carnival. The Gulf War had just begun, and many of the locals were afraid that Mexico, with its oil reserves, would soon be attacked by the U.S. I met all the neighbors, including ?the girl next door.? When her mother told me if I stuck around until Valentine?s Day that she?d throw us a big party, it was time to move on.

Panama, 1992

It is a hot afternoon and I?ve crossed the border from Costa Rica into Panama after three months of pedaling in Central America. I?m hot and want nothing more than some cold water or fruit juice. These gentlemen insist on buying me a beer. The small roadside cantina is buzzing with flies, and the radio blares with a local soccer match.

My newfound friends are jovial and boisterous. The beer is warm. There are kids playing baseball in the sparse field across the road. The men are all smiles -- until they pose for the photo. Everyone outside of this photo is laughing hysterically.

New Zealand, 1993

Mark was his name. He was a New Zealand kid from the North Island on his first bike trip. We are crossing a bridge on the west coast (also known as the wet coast) of the South Island. He called me grandpa because I was the oldest bicycle traveler he?d met.

He didn?t have much money and detested pasta, so he was lugging a 20-pound bag of potatoes along with the rest of his gear. I?d never seen any human eat as much as Mark could at one sitting. He slowed his pace to travel with me a while. When I asked him how far he usually traveled in a day, he replied, ?Oh, I guess about 130 to 180 kilometers a day. Is that good??

I assured him that even for most cyclists who weren?t lugging around a 20 pound sack of potatoes, that was a healthy daily distance.

Secrets of South Florida -- Revealed!

This week's Bike Overnight story is relatively short on words, but well worth taking a look at if you're a Northerner (or not) who's trying to come up with a destination for a midwinter bicycling break.

In "Secrets of South Florida," longtime Adventure Cycling life member Frank Negron decides it's "finally time to get Diana and our almost two-year-old involved in the world of bike touring. So, we loaded up and prepared for a couple of stress-free travel days on our bicycles. Utilizing Adventure Cycling's Atlantic Coast Bicycle Route maps, we set off from home in Cutler Bay, Florida. I pulled a trailer with our gear, and Joshua sat in the bike seat behind Diana."

For their first night, the family rode to and stayed at Everglades International Hostel, an 'Urban Oasis in the Heart of Florida City.'

"The hostel is one of those places that most natives would never think of visiting," Frank writes. "We were pleasantly surprised to find that this little gem exists."

On night two, the small family group overnighted at the Larry and Penny Thompson Park campground (but only after visiting the Robert is Here Fruit Stand and Farm), located next to the Miami Metro-Zoo. "Another beautiful spot even a lot of locals aren't aware of," Frank writes.

"All in all, this is a perfect short bike tour that can be done in winter, making it particularly appealing for all of those afflicted with snow on the ground!"

Read the rest of Frank's tale at BikeOvernights.org. There you'll also find a collection of Photos of the Week, including this week's image, shown below. It comes from the story A (Wet) Commuter's First Bike Overnight, by Giles Snyder.

Popping Champagne

Things I learned about popping champagne. Just in case you are ever in that situation. I have never actually popped a bottle of champagne on a podium until last weekend. Sure they give you beer, jerseys, flowers, kisses, and antlers…but not always champagne. It turns out “sprinters” have that opportunity much more than other types of riders. Crits are known for champagne. Time trials? Let’s be honest…I am stoked for $20 and a T-shirt. I sabered the top off a champagne bottle once. That is an excellent party trick. Yet,...

It often refers to a rider pedaling up a high mountain or a long time trial where the toughest mental competitors drive themselves beyond their physical red zone and can hold [...]

Long distances, small feats. Chrono des Nations.

Sometimes great distances must be travelled to accomplish small feats. How far would you travel to race your bike for 20.87 km? I travelled exactly 4973 miles. One way. Why? Simple. Chrono des Nations. Chrono des Nations, celebrating its 30th year anniversary, is one of the largest one day UCI time trials in the world that signifies the end of the European racing season. How could I turn down this? After spending the last two years trying to conquer the concussions and the elusive side effects, I needed to give...

Is Addison Lee good for London cyclist?

At this stage I have to say RIP to all those who have lost there lives cycling on the UK roads at the hands of motorist. The Addison Lee debate seems to be the topic of the moment, its either the boss of Addison Lee John Griffin is a genius or and absolute idiot. Griffin's original article had stirred up heated debate on the internet as it suggested that cyclists in London willingingly took their lives into their own hands by riding on roads. He said that cyclists should be properly trained and pay for using roads, summing up the article with "It is time for us to say to cyclists 'You want to join our gang, get trained and pay up'. I have come to the conclusion that he is a genius he is getting loads of free advertising when you think cab firm the 1st name that you will think of now will be Addison Lee. He has been in the printed press on the radio, Twitter, Facebook and now even I find my self-writing about John Griffin and Addison Lee. He is also good for cyclist and has highlighted the fact that cyclist need to stick together as we seem to be gaining more power in transport discussions in the city, we even have the London mayoral candidates fighting over or vote it is important that cycling stays free and free from the involvement of big business. It does not matter what John Griffin says about cyclist he is only a cab firm who wants to use the bus lanes and has been clever in the way he has diverted the attention of that topic and on to cycling and cyclist. What worry?s me if he get his way it would mean all cab firms and independent cab drivers will want to be able to use the bus lanes putting more cyclist in danger, a bus lane is like a secondary bike lane where as a cyclist.

?Banner year? for Adventure Cycling Association

A “banner year” for the Adventure Cycling Association can only be good news for bicycling in general.

The nonprofit bicycle touring association announced this week that the number of members and participants in its bicycle tours rose in the past year, as did its operating budget and revenue.

That tells me that more people than …
