A Woman on Her Own in Vermont

Point and click your way over to BikeOvernights.org to read about Deb Rogers' first solo overnight, taken in the Green Mountains of Vermont -- which, she discovered is "a wonderful place for a bike tour. I found a 100-mile loop with campgrounds about 50 miles apart. It is hard to get a campsite on the weekends in New England on short notice, so I went midweek instead. The ride traveled along valleys, so it wasn't particularly hilly -- no large mountains to climb."

Deb, 47, says that in her "former life" she was a CPA, and then an employee benefits specialist. Now she invests in residential rental real estate, splitting her time between Minneapolis and Boston, where her husband works. "I am a huge fan of short packed trips," she says. "They don't require much planning and are not as intimidating as a longer trip (but those are fun, too). My husband and I have done three together in Minnesota; this ride in Vermont was my first solo trip."

To make the trip unaccompanied, Deb had to cross over her comfort-level threshold. "Anxiety almost kept me from going on this trip. I wasn't exactly afraid of going alone -- just anxious. What if I had forgotten something important? What if it was too hilly and I couldn't do the mileage? What if I had a mechanical problem that I couldn't fix? But each of these potential problems I could have handled with a cool head, a little cash, and the help of a kind Vermonter. I am so glad that I went, and I've vowed to do it again soon."

Our current Photo of the Week, shown below, accompanies Joel Bickford's tale of cycling in rural North Dakota, The Sauerkraut Route, which posted on April 23, 2012. The photograph was taken by Chuck Haney, who has supplied Adventure Cycling with dozens of great shots over the years.
